Runway Report: Fall's Top 5 Fashion Trends

As the Violet x Grace team moves into the market to buy for the Fall season ahead, we believe all of the designers and teams behind these brands deserve a round of applause for persevering through an incredibly heavy geopolitical climate.

At Balenciaga, creative director Demna Gvaslia questioned the relevance of fashion during times such as these, and even considered cancelling his show due to the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Ultimately, Gvaslia decided to carry on with the collection: "It is a dedication to fearlessness, to resistance, and to the victory of love and peace," he wrote in the show notes.

While fashion may seem meaningless given the state of the world, it is important to remember the power that fashion has to unite people. Fashion and style are tools for self-expression and connection, which is something that we value deeply at Violet x Grace.

Read on for the full Violet x Grace runway report, and to shop our 5 favorite trends from the Fall 2022 runways...

Power Suiting

Unknown Vendor

The suit is perhaps the most evergreen trend to have populated the Fall 2022 runways in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. This season, the classic wardrobe staple received an update in the way of sexier and more novel details, such as wider lapels, deep cuts, and new hues, thanks to designers like Matthew Williams at Givenchy and Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent.*

*Style Note: Yves Saint Laurent famously popularized Le Smoking jackets for women in the 60’s - a style that was once relegated to men’s wardrobes only. For a modern take on the classic style, pair your favorite suit jacket with a bralette or lace camisole for a peek-a-boo effect.

The Mini Skirt

Unknown Vendor

The hemline index is rising. A carryover trend from Spring 2022, mini skirts are coming in hot for Fall 2022 and the rise of shorter hemlines shows no signs of slowing down, according to stylist Lotta Volkova who styled the Miu Miu show.

Other designers like Balmain, Courreges, and Coperni (a favorite of Bella Hadid's) also showed iterations of the micro mini for Fall, which we love styled a variety of ways.*

*Style Note: Try it with an IRO blazer for the office, or a sheer Cotton Citizen tank top for after hours.

Tank Tops

Unknown Vendor

Elevated basics are the dealer’s choice these days. Tastemaker brands Bottega Veneta and Prada gravitated towards sexy, simple basics like ribbed tank tops* for the Fall 2022 season.

*Style Note: Unsure of what to pair it with? We like the idea of a ribbed Cotton Citizen tank top styled back to a loose-fitting pair of Moussy Vintage shorts, for a sexy, off-duty vibe.

Shades of Blue

Unknown Vendor

Shades of blue are having a renaissance this coming Fall season. Whether it was cobalt, denim-on-denim, or Yves Klein Blue, brands like Balenciaga, Gucci, and Marni all showed some variation of the trending blue hue in their collections in different ways.*

Always a step ahead, Kim Kardashian recently posted an Instagram photo wearing a bright blue jacket by 25-year-old Chinese designer Dingyun Zhang.

*Style Note: Try the trend on for size by dressing in head-to-toe blue, or denim, for a monochromatic fashion moment.

Wide Legs

Unknown Vendor

After years of skinny pant supremacy, the pendulum is starting to swing the other direction. While the editors at Violet x Grace won’t be ditching their skinny jeans any time soon, we are excited that the wide leg silhouette is finally coming back into fashion.

Not only are wide leg pants comfortable, but the styling options are limitless!*

*Style Note: Slip into your favorite pair of wide leg trousers or jeans, and wear them with a cropped blouse from Zimmermann, or, if a sleek evening look is in order, try a satin bralette from Fleur du Mal.
